The Washington Commanders have some pressing needs heading into this year’s NFL Draft… quarterbacks, offensive lines, linebackers, and perhaps “strongest needs” at cornerbacks.
In NFL.com’s first mock draft, the Commanders are set to acquire Oregon Ducks cornerback Christian Gonzalez with the 16th pick.
“Gonzalez (6’2″, 201lbs) has the ideal balance of size, speed and fluidity. He struggled a bit early in the season but continued to improve throughout the year.” NFL.com writes. “Washington desperately needs the position.”
The strong need stems from the team sending William Jackson III to the Pittsburgh Steelers just before the NFL trade deadline.
The team starts Kendall Fuller and Benjamin St Just at the top of the depth chart going into the league year. But Fuller has just one year left on the four-year deal he signed in 2020. San Justo is improving, but the question remains as to whether he will be a true No. 1 cornerback option in the NFL.
Gonzales has that potential. In fact, he’s been a popular commander player in other mock drafts.
“Gonzalez is one of the most versatile cornerbacks in the class,” wrote PFF. “This position, with its level of fluidity and explosiveness, is rarely seen for a 6-foot-2 player. broke the times
Draft Network claims that Gonzalez could be “the best cover corner” to enter the draft.
With Gonzales continuing to rise in recent mock drafts, questions remain as to whether he’ll be available when the Commander is on duty.
