Perhaps trying to live up to famed New Yorker Jerry Seinfeld’s claim of the existence of a “mutual divide,” the New York Knicks are reportedly trying to help one of the veterans steer in the right direction. I’m here.
Speculation continues to rage about reserve guard Derrick Rose. Should a trade for Rose come to fruition, the Knicks are reportedly doing their best to ensure the 2011 MVP finds a suitable new home.
“Sources say New York is open to finding a new home through a trade for former MVP Derrick Rose,” longtime NBA correspondent Marc Stein wrote on his website. But (that’s) only if, as one insider puts it, he can be a longtime favorite of (head coach Tom) Thibodeau.”
While his big-city purpose has all but vanished…at least from an on-court perspective…Rose has served as a mentor and foresight for a team headed into the future starring Jalen Branson and RJ Barrett. Rhodes has expressed no displeasure with Thibodeau’s notoriously crack-hard-to-crack system, which he previously worked with in Chicago and Minnesota, including the aforementioned MVP campaign. Hmm. He is in the midst of his fourth campaign and his second stint in New York and will return to the team in February 2021 after a one-hit-season stay in 2016-17. .
Rose (averaging 5.8 points and 1.8 assists in 26 games) won’t make a championship difference in box scores, but the Knicks have a championship he’s elusive. Another ideal situation for him would be a reunion with Chicago’s Bulls, whose fans have warmly welcomed United every time he visits his center as an opponent. Chicago is the first team out of the Eastern Conference’s current postseason situation, trailing Toronto by half a game to qualify for the final berth of the Eastern Conference play-in his tournament.
Meanwhile, the Knicks (23-19) will be back in action Sunday afternoon visiting one of Rose’s former employers, the Detroit Pistons (1pm ET, MSG).
