Morehouse College Senior Miles Johnson and Spelman College Jr. Zoria McLarklin will host NBA X HBCU Stream Watch the Miami Heat vs. New Orleans Pelicans on January 18 at 7:00 PM CT.
Most recently, Johnson was on the NBA MLK Day broadcast leading up to the Atlanta Hawks’ 121-113 victory over the Miami Heat. He was a young sideline reporter interviewing head coach Nate McMillan and accompanying longtime TNT reporter Chris Haynes.
Morehouse’s Maroon Tiger editor, Miles, thanked us for hosting tonight’s event. “This will be his third time participating in the NBA X HBCU stream,” Johnson said.

Johnson said the NBA’s producers and directors allowed him and McLarklin to have the full say over the content and production of the broadcast. “We’re doing it through software similar to Zoom so we can broadcast the game. We’ll have a pre-soundcheck in a few hours and then we’ll be online.”
In recent years, the National Basketball Association has given HBCU aspiring reporters and writers the visibility they need during games. Miles credits former Morehouse College alum Corey Guy for adding him to his first NBA X HBCU streaming his broadcast. Guy was his intern at Sekow Smith Memorial, which was first developed after the death of Turner Sports’ former NBA writer and his HBCU alum Sekow Smith.
Johnson said his professors Reggie Miller, Chris Haynes, and his fellow Morehouse brother Keone Grissom gave him “the opportunity and the hope that it will become an annual event.”
Kudos to the NBA for giving HBCU students like McClerkin and Miles exposure and allowing them to prove their talent to cover professional basketball. This is an invaluable and inspiring lesson for his future HBCU sports journalist.
