The Texas Rangers have put together an impressive winter of free agency deals, but they’re reportedly still aiming to add to a roster that can contend for the AL West crown in 2023.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the club is considering a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates star Bryan Reynolds as the Rangers look for a left fielder.
The Rangers’ biggest deal is former New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom, who signed a five-year, $185 million deal. The team also signed pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney.
Additionally, Martin Perez accepted the team’s qualifying offer to remain with the team in 2023 and acquire Jake Odorridge from the Atlanta Braves.
The Rangers will have an impressive rotation in 2023, with deGrom, Eovaldi, Heaney, Perez, Odrizzi and John Gray available. They also have a solid lineup featuring Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Adris Garcia.
However, the team’s left field spot is still in question. Bubba Thompson said in 2022 with the Rangers he appeared in 55 games, batting .265/.302/.312 with 1 homer, 9 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and a depth topping his charts. standing in
Josh H. Smith is listed behind Thompson, appearing in 73 games for the Rangers last season, batting .197/.307/.249 with two homers and 16 RBIs.
With a fluid left field, the Rangers have access to players like Reynolds, who had an impressive four-year career with the Pirates. During his 2021 season, he earned his first All-Star selection, batting . 302/. 390/.
The 27-year-old batted .262/.345/.461 in 145 games during the 2022 season, with 27 homers, 62 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
Reynolds requested a trade from the Pirates last month after contract extension talks stalled. He is a desirable trade candidate as he will remain under the team’s control throughout his 2025 campaign.
According to Rosenthal, Reynolds wants out of Pittsburgh, but “baseball management continues to be skeptical that the Pirates will move him before the start of the season.” Texas faces a lot of competition for this outfielder, as the Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins are also interested in acquiring him.
According to Rosenthal, free agents AJ Pollock and David Peralta are among the options Texas is considering if Reynolds can’t be traded.
