The Washington Nationals haven’t made big waves this offseason. However, the club has acquired a number of cheap free agents and each has proven something.
The Nationals scooped up third baseman Jaymar Candelario after the Detroit Tigers didn’t offer him a contract. /.814 was recorded.
The Nationals also acquired former frontrunner Jeter Downs, who was picked by the Boston Red Sox this winter. Still only 24 years old, Downs was the centerpiece of the Mookie Betts deal until just three years ago.
Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith was also once a frontrunner in the New York Mets’ pipeline. The Nationals picked him up, too.
Here’s a quick rundown of the Nationals’ moves this offseason:
Lost Free Agents: DH Nelson Cruz, 1B Luke Boight, RHP Joe Roth, 2B Cesar Hernandez
Addition of free agents: LF Corey Dickerson, 1B Dominic Smith, SS Jeter Downs, RHP Trevor Williams, 3B Jaymer Candelario, CF Stone Garrett
trade:
- Traded RHP AJ Alexie to Minnesota Twins for RHP Christian Jimenez.
- Seattle Mariners traded to RF Frankie Tostard
Re-signing: RHP Erasmo Ramirez, LHP Sean Doolittle
