The Texas Rangers have made a lot of noise this offseason when it comes to starting pitchers, and one of those hurlers could be the team’s best player in 2023, according to MLB.com.
On this site, we’ve put together predictions about which player will be the best player for each team based on the use of WAR stats (win over replacement). WAR measures a player’s worth in all aspects of the game by deciphering whether they are worth more wins than alternative level players in the same position.
MLB.com believes newly signed pitcher Jacob deGrom will be the Rangers’ best player in 2023, based on WAR.
According to MLB.com:
If he hits 150 innings, he could lead all of WAR. Also: Marcus Semien Last year was better than you thought.
The comments about the second baseman were a nod to the fact that he was the club’s best player according to WAR in 2022. His WAR rating on him was 5.9. Semien was also a Gold Glove finalist.
He was one of two infielders to sign long and lucrative contracts with the Rangers last offseason. The other is short-haired Corey Seager. DeGrom believes those signings got him interested in signing with the Rangers.
DeGrom joins a rotation that includes three new veterans: Jake Odrizzi, Andrew Heaney and Nathan Eovaldi. John Gray and Martín Perez are holding out, but Perez agreed to a $19.65 million qualifying offer, signed only through 2023.
DeGrom is 82-57 with a 2.52 ERA. He has won the Cy Young Award twice and has appeared in the All-Star Game three times. He was also the 2014 National League Rookie of the Year.
DeGrom has made 15 or fewer starts in each of his three seasons — 12 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, 15 in 2021 and 11 in 2022. -Star Break, a stress reaction in his right scapula delayed his 2022 debut to August, where he ended up with a 3.08 ERA in his 5-4 record.
