Michigan’s Joint Attack Coordinator, Matt Weiss, has been put on leave amid an investigation by the University Police following a “computer access crime report.” The incident allegedly took place at the team’s football facility, Schembechler Hall, between December 21 and 23, but UMPD has not released further details. A Jan. 5 report in the university’s Daily Crime and Fire Log referred to “a fraudulent activity in which someone gains unauthorized access to the university’s email account,” but Weiss was not specifically mentioned.
Weiss has not been involved in any team or recruiting activities since his suspension and has not been allowed access to team facilities. A police spokesman said the investigation is still ongoing. Weiss coached Michigan in his 2022 Fiesta Bowl with TCU on December 31, 2022.
“We are aware that an investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department is ongoing and we are cooperating fully with investigators,” Weiss said in a statement to ESPN. “We look forward to the matter being resolved. To respect the integrity of the investigation, we will have no further comment.”
Weiss spent the 2021 season as quarterback coach under coach Jim Harbaugh before being promoted to joint offensive coordinator in 2022 with offensive line coach Sheron Moore following the departure of Josh Gattis. Despite the change, the Wolverines won the Big Ten Championship for the second year in a row and qualified for the College Football Playoffs.
Before attending the University of Michigan, Weiss played various roles on the staff of the Baltimore Ravens under Jim Harbaugh’s brother, John. Weiss played punter for Vanderbilt University from 2001 to 2003, but he never appeared in a game.
