The New York Mets certainly haven’t hesitated to spend money this offseason.
And with New York looking to add a depth piece to the outfield, they could reportedly return to the free agent pool.
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Thursday that the Mets are interested in 2013 National League MVP Andrew McCutchen as a fourth outfielder.
The prime of McCutchen’s career began a few years ago when the five-time All-Star with the Pittsburgh Pirates recently flew around the league.
Last season with the Milwaukee Brewers, the 36-year-old McCutchen had a subpar season batting .237 with 17 homers and 69 RBIs. However, in 2021 with the Philadelphia Phillies, McCutchen achieved 27 round-trippers, showing that he may still have some pop left in his bat.
The Mets already had Sterling Marte, Mark Kanha and Brandon Nimo, who stepped down this offseason to sign eight-year, $162 million deals as outfielders. But the addition of McCutchen could provide New York with insurance in case one of his starters gets hurt.
New York has already pledged around $500 million to free agency, including making a big splash with the signings of Justin Verlander and Kodai Senga.
