The final month of the regular season has arrived, and the local basketball hierarchy is still unclear. Aside from Paul VI, who hasn’t dropped a local game this winter and continues to beat impressive opponents, so far this year the DC area teams haven’t looked unruly. Hmm.

Three of the top five ranked teams lost games last week. Gonzaga dropped his two Washington his Catholic Athletic Conference contests, St. His Johns losing to the top-ranked Panthers, and Sidwell His Friends losing Heartbreaker to St. His Andrews. These results shook the rankings and allowed teams like Hayfield to rise higher.

Further down the list, Friendship Tech came in at number 20 with a 17-game winning streak.

The Panthers had a strong week in the WCAC, beating No. 3 St. John’s at home and then on the road to defeating Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs have maintained a steady dominance in the Interstate Athletic Conference, with comfortable wins against St Albans and Episcopal last week.

3. St. John’s (18-2) LR: 4

The Cadets lost the road game to leader Paul VI, but bounced back with a win over The Heights.

The Hawks played fine last week, beating Annandale and Thomas Jefferson by more than 30 points.

The Eagles had a tough week, dropping to No. 16 Good Counsel and No. 1 Paul VI.

The Pioneers’ triumph last week included a non-conference victory over LC Bird in Richmond.

7. Bishop McNamara (19-4) LR: 8

The Mustangs defeated O’Connell and No. 18 DeMasa by equal scores last week, 71-68.

8. Sidwell Friends (14-4) LR: 5

The Quakers lost the conference for the first time this year, losing to No. 10 St. Andrews at the buzzer.

9. Jackson Reid (22-6) LR: 9

The Tigers handled business last week by beating No. 15 Theodore Roosevelt and School Without Walls in a DC Interscholastic Athletic Association game.

10. St Andrews (16-3) LR: 12

After a dramatic victory over Sidwell, the Lions picked up another conference victory over Mallett.

11. Battlefield (19-1) LR: 11

The Bobcats overtook Osborne and Osborne Park last week.

12. Shabach Christian (20-5) LR: 15

The Eagles won their only game last week, defeating Mount Zion Prep by a margin of 13.

Puma suffered its first loss of the season last week, trailing Bowie by three points.

14. Riverdale Baptiste (16-2) LR: 13

The Crusaders lost their first game since mid-December, losing to Virginia Academy.

15. Theodore Roosevelt (20-2) LR: 14

The Roughriders suffered their first local loss of the winter against No. 9 Jackson Reed.

The Swarmin’ Hornets continue to impress in Montgomery County.

After starting the season 2-5, the Titans went on a 17-game winning streak.
