The Evergreen Boys basketball team endured a 43-point effort from Tate Spencer at Battle Ground to hold off the Tigers 71-67 in Friday’s non-league game.
The Planesmen’s senior night (6-9 overall) started with a 3-pointer by senior team manager Grant Adams before heading into the race with the senior lineup from there.
“They’ve done a great job leading us,” Evergreen coach Brett Henry said of the seniors, who scored a combined 28 points.
Spencer scored 21 points in the first half to keep the Tigers (9-3) close. He also made his five 3-pointers in the game. His two of his three losses in Battleground have been against Evergreen.
“He’s deadly from everywhere,” said Henry. “We tried another look on him to mix it up.”
This included 6-foot-7 Arthur Van guarding 6-3 Spencer at the end of the game.
“And his shot didn’t fall in the end,” Henry said.
Battleground came within a point in the fourth quarter, but Evergreen didn’t give up the lead thanks to several successful free throws.
Quincy Caston and Dez Daniel scored 13 points each at Evergreen, with Landon Rayner adding 10 points.
Kamas 71, Skyview 40 — A 30-point blowout in the second quarter gave Kamas a win over Skyview in the dominant 4A Greater St. Helens League.
The Papermakers (10-4, 3-0) led by 9 points at the end of the first quarter and blew the game away with six 3-pointers in the second, including five from Beckett Curry, leading 46-22. led at halftime.
The sophomore scored a game-high 34 points with eight 3-pointers, with Theo McMillan adding 12 and Jamison Carlyle scoring 11.
Demarie Collins scored a team-leading 12 points (8-5, 0-3) for Skyview and had a shooting percentage of 24% (50-12).
Kelso 76, Prairie 68 — Peyton Stewart scored 10 of 18 points in the third quarter to help the Highlanders win the 3A Greater St. Helens League.
Prairie manager Jimmy Tuominen said, “We had a two-minute stretch in the third quarter and ran a little bit.” Peyton Stewart was a big part of it. But that was the difference.”
Michael Henderson scored 16 and Ethan Mitchell scored 10 (8-5, 4-1).
Bailey Cousson-Sabbath had a game-high 33 points on the Prairie (4-10, 1-4).
Woodland 75, Columbia River 65 — The Beavers led 17-9 in the first quarter and never looked back in the 2A GSHL game.
Dane Huddleston led all scorers with 21 points and Bo Wett added 17 points for the Beavers (9-5, 6-3 2A GSHL).
Columbia Rivers (4-9, 4-5) were led by Aaron Hoey’s 19 points.
Ridgefield 56, Fort Vancouver 42 — Kolten Castro hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter and scored 23 to give the Spuders the lead.
Syd Bryant added 11 for Ridgefield (7-6, 6-3 2A Greater St. Helens League). Kaeleb Cvitkovich scored his 14 points to lead his Fort.
Lake Ridge (Oregon) 57, Heritage 27 — Jose Zacharias scored eight goals to lead Heritage in league defeats.
