HONOLULU – The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team got off to a fast start and thwarted a strong rally in the second half to take a 58-51 home win by CSUN at Simplify Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center on Monday night. The Rainbow Warriors improved to his 14-4 overall and his 5-1 in the Big West, his ninth victory in the last 10 contests.
The win put UH in a three-way tie for second place in the Big West standings, just half a game behind first place UC Riverside. It also marked UH’s eighth straight home win, tying the longest such streak in seven years.
UH’s signature defense once again secured victory. Bowes held CSUN (3-15, 0-7) scoreless with 3:16 of the final after the Matador once reduced a 19-point deficit to one. His shooting percentage for CSUN in this game was just 31%, including his 21% in the first half.

De’Aaron Tucker’s three-point play gave them a 52-51 lead with 3:16 remaining. UH won’t let you get any closer. UH gave UH a breather with his six points at the end of the game, including Da Silva’s putback with 2:22 remaining. Trailing 54-51, CSUN had one last chance to tie the game, but De’Sean Allen-Eikens’s 23-second 3-pointer on him fell off the mark and UH ended the game at the free-throw line .
The Rainbow Warriors next travel to the mainland for two big road games, starting Thursday, January 19, against UC Irvine. Tips are at the Bren Event Center at 7:00 PM PT/5:00 PM HT.
