PHOENIX — Spencer Dinwiddie scored a season-high 36 points, Dorian Finney-Smith added 18 points and 12 rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks lost All-Star guard Luka Doncic to a sprain Thursday night. Despite this, they beat the Phoenix Suns 99-95. Ankle early in the game.

Dinwiddie’s hot shot helped the Mavs succeed without Doncic, who limped back to the locker room early in the first quarter and never returned. The veteran guard hit 10 of his 18 shots from the field, 5 of which he was a 3-pointer. He also made 11 free throws.

The Mavs led the entire second half, but Suns guard Chris Paul made a layup with 19.7 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 96-95. The Mavs closed out the game with a free throw in the final seconds.

Dinwiddie had some tough shooting all night, including a long 3-pointer with seconds left in the 3rd quarter to give the Mavs a 76-69 lead going into the 4th. He hit another 3 with 3:32 left to take a 95-86 lead.

Cam Johnson and Paul led the Suns with 22 points each. Deandre Ayton scored 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds, but made only 6 of 20 shots. Paul added his 10 assists.

The Mavs pushed to a 54-48 halftime lead. Dinwiddie led all scorers with 20 points before the break, and Johnson scored 13 for the Suns.

The Mavericks went on a six-game losing streak against the Suns in the regular season, but beat Phoenix in the Western Conference Semifinals in seven games last year in the playoffs.

Phoenix had a four-game winning streak.

Doncic played just three minutes before limping into the locker room during a timeout. The 23-year-old, who was named an All-Star for the fourth straight season on Thursday, entered the game averaging 33.8 points, 9.1 rebounds and 8.6 assists.

He tried to move near the basket against Johnson, but stepped on Michal Bridges’ foot before passing the ball and limping. A foot 7 guard slowly made his way to the locker room.
