After the Lions capped off the NFL regular season with a stunning victory at Lambeau Field on Sunday, running back Jamal Williams said in a memorable postgame interview after Detroit won 20-16. Ended the night.
Williams, who spent his first four seasons in Green Bay, returned to his former home ground to help the Lions defeat their NFC North rivals and prevent Aaron Rodgers & Co from returning to the postseason. Williams won big with his two touchdowns in his performance, surpassing Hall of Famer Barry Sanders’ franchise record (16) for most rushing scores in a season. The sixth-year pro exceeded 1,000 yards in a win for the first time in his career.
After the game, an emotional Williams spoke with NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark to mark the big day for his recently deceased 92-year-old great-grandfather.
“I dedicate this to him,” Tears-eyed Williams told Stark. I’m just grateful to be in his life, to play football and to be able to do this for him.”
When Williams did his best to regain his composure, the 27-year-old Williams quickly flipped the switch back to beast mode, wiped away his tears, and sent a message to everyone who doubted Detroit was going into the matchup. Sent. Entering Sunday night, the entire NBC crew, with the exception of Tony Dungey, significantly predicted The Packers beat the Lions in the pregame show.
“And one more thing, stop pretending to be us,” Williams continued. “We Detroit Lions, we Detroit Lions stopped playing with us and we don’t watch TV, but I hear people already chose the Packers over us. Play with us.” Don’t be fooled, that’s all I have to say, man. Don’t let these tears fool you. Everything’s fine around this mug. I’m fine.”
Williams seemed reluctant to continue sharing his feelings, but no one is likely to challenge his toughness.
Against Green Bay, Williams had 72 yards and 2 TDs on 16 carries. This is the sixth multi-TD game of the season. Both his scores were 1-yard plunges, and his first came in the third quarter, giving the Lions a 13–9 lead. But it was his second score for Williams that ultimately proved the difference. Williams found his zone at 5:55 in the fourth quarter, giving Detroit a decisive advantage.
Williams finished his second season with the Lions with a career-high 262 carries, 1,066 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns. Despite missing the playoffs for the sixth straight year, the 2022 season will be the Lions’ first winning season since 2017 (9-8).
