They don’t call Russell Westbrook Mr. Triple-Double. The all-time leader in triple-doubles in NBA history, he found himself in position to make even more history Sunday against the Philadelphia 76ers.
With his triple-double against Philadelphia, Westbrook officially became the all-time NBA leader in triple-doubles as a four-time reserve. Against the Orlando Magic a few weeks ago, Westbrook placed Detlef Schrempf at the top of the all-time list. Westbrook is now the sole leader.
After just three games this season, Lakers head coach Durbin Hamm decided to move Westbrook to an off-the-bench role. It’s unclear how Westbrook will react to the move, but it’s safe to say he welcomes it with open arms.
Westbrook quickly played excellent basketball, sometimes leading the Lakers to big wins as the second unit leader. He has already established himself as a frontrunner for the Sixth Man of the Year award and continues to put together his line with impressive stats.
Westbrook entered the season with zero triple-doubles as a reserve. Now, in his last 17 games since Dec. 9, he has appeared in four.
It took Schlempf 612 games off the bench to set an NBA record. It took him just 54 games for Westbrook to overtake Schrempf for the spot at the top of the list.
Congratulations to Westbrook for setting a new NBA triple-double record. He is truly the king of triple-doubles.
