John Coppolella’s permanent ban lasted just five years as the former Braves general manager was reinstated by Major League Baseball.
Coppolella resigned from his position with Atlanta in the fall of 2017 and was later permanently banned after violating MLB rules relating to contracts with foreign players.
“Given the more than five years spent on the ineligible list by Mr. Coppolella, the repentance he has expressed, and the other steps he has taken in response to this matter, we can confirm that Mr. Coppolella has been reinstated. The Coppolella Secretariat said in a statement.
After Coppolella resigned during an investigation, he was placed on MLB’s permanent ineligible list on November 21, 2017, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. In addition, he was declared a free agent. Sports reported at the time, among other punishments.
In a statement to The Athletic, Coppolella said, “I deeply regret and accept accountability for my actions.” I would like to once again apologize to my friend, I am grateful for this decision and will work hard every day to honor this opportunity.”
Before joining the Braves, Coppolella started his MLB career with the Yankees. His tenure with the Braves began in his 2006 season, and in 2015 he was officially named the organization’s general manager following the season. Since the ban, Coppolella has worked at three of his companies outside the league (Diamond Resorts, Coppy Solutions, LLC and Capital Vacations), according to its LinkedIn page.
The Braves won the World Series in 2021 and lost to the Phillies in the NLDS after leading the NL East again last season. From shortstop Dansby Swanson to Max Freed, key pieces of these teams were acquired by Coppolella during his Braves days.
Following Coppolella’s resignation, Alex Anthopoulos joined the organization in November 2017, retaining the title of President and General Manager of Baseball Operations.
