Expectations were high for the Jets running back with Michael Carter entering this season.
Carter showed a lot of potential as a rookie in 2021 and thought he would be a big part of the offense this season. Carter had 398 yards and 3 touchdowns in his 111 rushes, all down from his rookie season when he had 147 carries for 639 yards and 4 touchdowns.
“I feel like I did well,” Carter said earlier this week before the finale against the Dolphins on Sunday. “I feel like I could have done more, but opportunity is important in this game.
Carter said he hasn’t complained about his lack of touches. He led the team with 150 touches this season. He sounded more upset that he was third down for most of this season and wasn’t given the chance to do a few different things.
The Jets had Brees Hall rolling in the early stages, trading for James Robinson, then Zonovan Knight, and then Ty Johnson in the second half. I felt like I didn’t believe it.
Some of it clearly bothered Carter, and he said he had to learn from it.
“I feel like I had a really good offseason,” Carter said. “Preparation must meet the opportunity. I think and things happen, there are things out of my control, I feel like I’m doing my best to control what I can and keep external factors out of my reach.
“I think I allow such things to reach me.”
Carter said this season has been a learning experience and he’s excited to apply those lessons going forward.
“Sometimes you have to knock it down to know if it will get up,” said Carter. “This season is all about showing who you are and proving that you know who you are no matter what happens around you.”
Coach Robert Saleh said this week that a second season can be a challenge for players and he expects Carter to rebound.
“He’s still someone I think has a really good recovery. We still have a chance this week, but we’re not done writing his story.” A second-year player, neither the first nor the last.
“But he has all the abilities in the world. He has speed, he has body contact balance, he has break tackles, he has great vision. He is very smart and he has all these tools. I think it’s just another offseason for him.It’s back in development and why do I always say it takes three years.The third year he goes, he’s going to bust Ruth.
The Jets have signed Safety Will Parks, DE Bradley Anae, OL Eric Smith, OL Adam Panky and WR Irvin Charles to their active roster. They placed the following players in his IR: S Lamarcus Joyner, CB Brandin Echols, OT Duane Brown, OT George Fant, G Nate Herbig.
