South African boxing legend Gerry Coetsey has died at the age of 67.
Boxing News – South Africa’s first heavyweight champion Jerry Coetzee dies after tragic battle with cancer
On Thursday, it was announced that Coetzee passed away after a brief battle with the disease.
According to his family, he was recently diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Lina, and two children, Lana and Gerald.
Coetzee, nicknamed the ‘Boksburg bomber’, won 33 out of 40 battles.
The Boksburg-born fighter successfully challenged Michael Doakes for the WBA heavyweight title in 1983 at the Ohio Coliseum.
He won the fight by knockout in the tenth round.
But he is best known on this coast for his memorable battle with Frank Bruno in London three years later.
He retired in 1997 at the age of 42 after becoming South Africa’s first heavyweight world champion, defeating Leon Spinks, James Tillis and Scott Ledoux.

Respected sportswriter Clinton van der Berg said, “The giant has fallen. The Boksburg bomber has fallen ill. Won the WBA Heavyweight Championship by 10-round KO over Mike Doakes.” Almost exactly 40 years after that great victory, Gerrie Coetzee passed away at the age of 67. One of my boyhood heroes. RIP.”
South African rugby reporter Brendan Nell wrote: Memories from childhood. Wake up at 3am and look at his box. The world heavyweight champion is gone. RIP. ”
Former IBO Welterweight Champion Chris Van Halden added: He is South Africa’s first heavyweight boxing champion. ”
Local politician Herman Mashaba also paid tribute, stating: I had the privilege of promoting boxing with Jerry in the 70’s and his 80’s. I will never forget his passion. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
Bok Radio’s official account also posted: Rest in peace Gary. Your name will live on forever. Heartfelt condolences and condolences to all his friends and family. ”
