Iranian authorities have arrested football players who attended a mixed party in eastern Tehran, local media reported on Sunday, but did not identify them or give exact numbers.
“Several current and former players of one of Tehran’s prominent football clubs were arrested last night (Saturday) at a mixed party in the city of Damavand,” Tasnim news agency said.
“Some of these players were in abnormal conditions due to alcohol consumption,” it added.
Iranian law only allows non-Muslims to consume alcohol for religious purposes. Dancing with the opposite sex is prohibited.
Iranian news agency YJC said the party was a birthday event and all but one detainee had since been released.
The Islamic Republic has been rocked by unrest since 22-year-old Masa Amini died in custody on September 16 after being arrested for violating a strict dress code for women.
Iranian officials say hundreds have been killed in the unrest, including members of the security forces, and thousands have been arrested.
Many current and former football players, other athletes and celebrities have been detained or interrogated by authorities after expressing support for the protests.
