On Wednesday, Indiana Women’s Soccer announced changes to its coaching staff. Former assistant coach Emily Basten was replaced by Hannah Sullivan. Sullivan will assume the assistant/goalkeeping coach role with each release.
“We are very excited to welcome Hannah Sullivan to our program,” head coach Erwin van Venekom said Wednesday. “She will serve as assistant and goalkeeping coach and will be involved in all aspects of the programme.”
“Emily has been my pillar and has had a huge impact on the program over the last seven years, first as a student-athlete, then as an alumni assistant, and the last few years as an assistant coach.”
Basten spent a total of six seasons on the coaching staff after graduating from the program in 2015. Basten transferred to Indiana as a senior year after spending his first three years at the University of Michigan in Central. Basten served as a graduate assistant from 2017 until he became a volunteer assistant a year later.
In 2020, Basten was promoted to full-time assistant and oversaw the Hoosiers’ program-record six wins in the 2020-21 season.
“We wish Emily all the best in her non-gaming career.
A native of Fishers, Indiana, Sullivan fills the same role as Basten, developing players in programs and sports.
“I am very excited to be part of the IU family and would like to thank Irwin for the opportunity to join this experienced and skilled staff,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan was the goaltender for Indiana State University from 2016 to 2019, appearing in 39 games and making 177 saves. This is the fifth in program history. Her 1.57 goals against average ranks second in program history.
Sullivan spent the 2020-21 season at Marian College, helping lead the Knights to a program-record 21 wins.
Sullivan continued her education by earning a Master of Arts in Sports Management and Public Relations from Ball State University in 2022. Her most recent coaching role was as an assistant at Ball State University where she was responsible for recruitment, travel, team operations and more. The Cardinals went 7-5-8, shutting out her six opponents and advancing to Mid-American her conference championship.
“During the recruitment process, Hannah’s drive, competitiveness, expertise in training goalkeepers and her personality stood out in the recruitment process,” said Van Venekom. “It quickly became clear that she was the perfect fit for our program!”
At Fishers High School, Sullivan was a standout goaltender, earning all-state and district honors in 2014, the year the team won state championships. As a senior, Sullivan recorded 17 shutouts and 0.3 goals against average.
Sullivan also has experience with the Indy Premier Soccer Club, winning two state championships. She also played in the Olympic Development Program in 2013 and she in 2014.
