It’s been confirmed, or at least planned, as to what the New York Mets will do with Tyler Megill and David Peterson. We hope to be ready to start playing games in 2019.
This is no different from how the Mets first assigned the pair last season. But when Jacob deGrom hit IL, Megill ended up in the rotation and became the starter for the season opener. Peterson was regularly used as an emergency starter, often either him or Trevor Williams.
The beauty of this is that the Mets officially have the best starting pitching depth in baseball. But find a team that has seven of his starting pitchers on the MLB roster. Many clubs don’t have five of him.
Beyond Megill and Peterson, the Mets could tap into Joey Lucchesi in a similar way. You might want to see what you can do as a left-handed relief.
Expected longman Eliza Hernandez from the bullpen is more standard for what the team has on the roster for the starting pitching base. Compared to other clubs, he hasn’t pushed the Mets to the top. Nevertheless, it’s good that he’s available.
Having this kind of rotation depth is essential for the club with its youngest starter, 30-year-old Kodai Senga. Starting five shoulders and elbows have a ton of mileage. Stretching out and getting ready will help Megill and Peterson get through the year.
It will be interesting to see how often the Mets actually plan the pair’s starts throughout the season. Do you ever get promoted to active duty just to give everyone else an extra day off?
