High School Roundup: Edison’s Women’s Soccer Blanks Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach (3-6-3) will host CdM in the Wave League opener on Tuesday.

Huntington Beach 5, Fountain Valley 2: The Oilers improved to 14-2-1 after winning a crossover match at home in the Sunset Conference on Thursday.

The Barons (8-4-1) are on a three-game losing streak in Tuesday’s Wave League opener at Marina.

Marina 1, Los Alamitos 1: Alex Ortenzo scored a penalty kick goal for the Vikings, helping them to a draw in Thursday’s Sunset Conference crossover match.

Marina is now 4-3-4.

women’s basketball

Huntington Beach 47, Newport Harbor 31: Akemi Tanga had 19 points and 8 rebounds for the Oilers in the Sunset Conference crossover game at Huntington Beach High on Thursday.

Isobel Meritas scored 11 points at Huntington Beach (8-11), who scored seven points from both Ashley Dean and Lauren Matsumoto, who also had 11 rebounds.

Kaitlyn Leibe led Newport Harbor (1-18) with 10 points.

Huntington Beach will host Edison in the Wave League opener on Tuesday, while Newport Harbor will host Los Alamitos to kick off Surf League play.

Fountain Valley 39, Edison 35: Carly Waite had 10 points and 8 rebounds for the Barons in the Sunset Conference crossover game at Edison High on Thursday.

Maria Kawakubo also scored 10 points (8-12) for Fountain Valley and Diana Burke scored seven.

Bailey Chan and Taylor Savage each gave Edison 13 points (9-11), while Mia Cassel had 5 points and 12 rebounds.

Fountain Valley will play at CdM in the Surf League opener on Tuesday, while Edison will play at Huntington Beach.

women’s water polo

Foothill 8, Laguna Beach 6: Kara Carver and Ava Knepper each scored twice for the Breakers in Thursday’s away non-league game.

Cleo Washer and Charlotte Riches also scored in Laguna Beach (5-4). Lauren Schneider recorded his 12 saves.

Costa Mesa 20, Santa Ana 8: The Mustangs won Thursday’s Orange Coast League opener.

Costa Mesa improved to 8-3 overall.
