High School Boys Basketball: Highlights from Tuesday’s Game

Fremont 54, Layton 53

In a matchup between the two top teams in Region 1, Fremont came out on top 54-53 thanks to well-timed offensive possessions and solid defensive play.

Boston Hadley hit the bucket with just over a minute left to give the Silverwolves a two-point advantage, then two strong defensive stands sealed the second half of the game. Clutch Bucket gave Hadley the only points of the night. Junior Hunter Hansen scored his game-high 22 points, leading the way to Fremont.

With the win, Fremont improved to 2–0 and started play in Region 1, giving the Lancers their first Legion loss.

Fremont manager Corey Melanie said, “This team is looking for a way to win the ball game in the late game.”

Brighton 49, Highland 48

Brighton were four ahead heading into the fourth quarter and outscored Highland 17-12 in the final minutes to a narrow 49-48 win on Tuesday night. The win gave the Bengals a valuable victory in a competitive Region 6 field.

Nash Matheson and Bradley Easton scored 18 and 11 points respectively to lead the way to Brighton. Highland’s Nathan Johnsen scored his 20 points for a game-high.

The result moved Brighton to 9-4 overall, while Highlands fell to 7-6 that year.

“Tonight was a defensive battle and both teams defended at a high level. Credit to the players who gave it to us,” Brighton coach Tim Gardner said.

Enterprise 75, South Sevier 67

Enterprise and South Sevier – two of the top teams in the 2A classification – kicked off their regional campaign on Tuesday night by going head-to-head. They needed extra time, but the Wolves rallied in the final minutes of the game to secure a potentially key 75-67 victory in the second half of the season.

The Enterprise outscored the Rams 14-6 in overtime. Sophomore center Traison Whitman led the way to the Wolves with a game and season-high 23 points. Austin Thomas also scored his 18 points for the Enterprise.

Enterprise coach Bud Randall said: “I was able to make some clutch shots in overtime and was able to get the win.”

Pleasant Grove 54, Riverton 52

After trading the lead back and forth three quarters, Pleasant Grove (7-6) took the lead in the closing stages to give Riverton a big win as they entered the game with a 9-3 record.

The Vikings were able to limit the Silverwolves to just 7 points in the 4th quarter with a narrow 54-52 win. After the first quarter, Pleasant his glove seemed to be on track as he led 18-8 early on. However, Riverton swooped in to tie the game at half-time and take a 3-point lead in the final quarter of play.

Austin Simon hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining to give the Vikings the point they needed to secure the win. The buzzer wasn’t enough.

“It was good to play 32 minutes tonight against a very good team, especially last Friday when they played very badly. It’s been great,” said Pleasant Grove coach Randy McAllister.

Cedar Valley 80, Salem Hills 73

After hitting early on a good start from Salem Hills, the Cedar Valley Aviators (who trailed by nine points after the first quarter) took advantage of a 25-13 scoring advantage in the fourth period to take advantage of the second half. He pulled away and took his ninth victory. Tuesday night with a score of 80-73 for the season.

The aviator trio of Jax Allen (29 points), Ty Christensen (24 points) and Cole Roberts (21 points) scored 74 of Cedar Valley’s 80 points. The win will give Cedar Valley momentum as the team opens its regional play in Uintah on Friday.

“At halftime, I knew I had to slow down their shooters and give them a chance to take the lead,” said Cedar Valley coach Blake Pugmire. He went on and told us to pull out the power play and find the open man.Our players did a great job of trusting each other to play right and hit open shots in the fourth quarter.”
