Guerrero, Blue Jays Agree to $14.5 Million to Avoid Arbitration

TORONTO (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays sidestepped salary arbitration Friday night by agreeing to a $14.5 million contract next season.

Toronto had 12 players eligible for arbitration, but only Tampa Bay, with 14, qualified more. The only member of that Blue Jays group who didn’t settle down on Friday was shortstop Beau Bichette.

Also included are Toronto closer Jordan Romano ($4,537,500), catcher Danny Jansen ($3.5M), right-hander Adam Cimber ($3.15M), outfielder Dalton Bajo ($3.05M), and infielder Kavan Biggio ($3.05M). $2.8M), infielder Santiago Espinal ($2.1M), lefty Tim Maza ($2.1M), right-hander Trevor Richards ($1.5M), reliever Eric Swanson ($1.25M), right-hander Trent Thornton (1,000,000).

Guerrero, runner-up in the 2021 AL MVP voting, earned $7.9 million last season. A two-time All-Star, he batted .274 with 32 home runs, 97 RBIs and a .818 OPS in 160 games. He also won a surprise Gold Glove Award for first base.

Bichette led the American League in that category for the second straight season with 189 hits. 290 batting average, 24 home runs, 43 doubles, 93 RBIs and . 802 OPS in his 159 games.

If the Blue Jays and Bichette do not reach an agreement, they will participate in a three-person arbitration panel hearing in St. Petersburg, Florida between January 30 and February 17.
