The Green County High School soccer complex will be a busy place this weekend as the Wildcats and Lady Cats host a rare doubleheader in the first round of the MHSAA 4A State Playoffs.
Both the GCHS boys and girls finished second in Region 7-4A, securing home field advantage in their Round 1 matchup at High School Road on Saturday. The Wildcats, who finished the regional schedule 4-2, will face his third seed, Mendenhall, in the regional 5-4A. The Lady Wildcats will play either Mendenhall or Quitman, depending on the results of Tuesday’s final regional contest. The Lady Tigers and Lady Panthers were in Tuesday’s game against the region’s top two teams, the Northeast He Jones and Samrall. The game time was not set for Tuesday’s press time.
Regardless of who the Lady Cats face, head coach Gianna Maxwell says her team is ready to take on the challenge.
“The girls are so excited to extend the season,” Maxwell said. “Looking at this year’s team, I feel the individual talent and team chemistry can take a big step forward into the playoffs.”
“Of course the girls have to go out and play, but I am very confident in their ability to achieve great results this postseason. I know you are.”
The Lady Cats qualified for the playoffs last Thursday in the legion finale against the Forest County AHS, but questions remained about exactly where they would finish. They didn’t get the support they needed to overtake Poplarville for the No. 1 seed, but he shutout the visiting Lady Guises 7-0 and ultimately ensured business. bottom.

The GCHS boys were pegged as the second seed before Thursday’s matchup. However, the Wildcats weren’t complacent and he finished the regional slate with a 5–2 victory in front of a home crowd at Senior Recognition Night.
“It was a great way to win over FCAHS and end the play for the region,” said GCHS head coach Paul Martin. “Thanks to Smith, his team always played us hard.”
Dalton Hicks opened the scoring for GCHS with help from senior Logan Smith. The Cats took a 2–0 lead shortly after when junior Rhett Brewer scored an assist from junior Jacques Tanguette. Sophomore Hunter McMillon made it 3-0 with a great finish on a crossed shot from senior Logan Smith, who pushed Brewer’s second to push the lead to his 4-0.
Hayden Grice scored for FCAHS to make it 4-1, adding a second goal for the Aggies with a penalty kick following a handball call in front of the GCHS goal. GCHS got the final score between Grice’s goals after McMillon was fouled in the box on the other side of the field. Brewer scored his kick for a penalty after a foul and scored the hat his trick.
It was a great win for the Wildcats as they prepare for the playoffs starting this week.
“We are looking forward to making the first round of the playoffs and doing well[in the postseason],” added Martin. “We’ve grown in confidence all year long. Even when we’ve lost, we’ve played well.”
“We’ve struggled to score goals at times, but we have a talented group that’s sharpened as the season progressed.”
