Former USC running back Charles White, who won the 1978 Trojans national championship and 1979 Heisman Trophy, died Wednesday, the school announced.
A native of Los Angeles, White helped found USC as the “Tailback U” and became the school’s third Heisman Trophy winner. He recorded his 6,245 career yards and remains the program’s all-time leading rusher. During his four seasons at White’s school, USC went 42-6-1, and headed John Robinson in his first four years in his coaching program, where he won three roses in his bowl. won.
White was eventually drafted by the Browns in the first round in 1980 and returned to Los Angeles with the Rams in 1985. He retired after his ’88 season and was inducted into his College Football Hall of Fame in ’96.
