The death of former NFL wide receiver Charles Johnson was ruled a suicide after he was found to have had a drug overdose inside a North Carolina hotel room, according to a report released by the North Carolina coroner’s office. It was
USA TODAYSports A 50-year-old man was found dead on July 17, lying in bed in a Hampton Inn room 6.5 miles from his home, Johnson’s report was obtained. He “played weird” and “purchased funeral and cremation services.”
Raleigh police officers found Johnson when the hotel called for a welfare check inside a room he had failed to check out on July 17. A few important items such as his wallet, mobile phone, and keys.
Johnson also left the car at home. According to reports, all that was in his hotel room was “two empty bottles, an empty travel container, a pair or sandals, and glasses.”
He was also not taking any active prescription medications and maintained a clean medical history.
A standout wide receiver for Colorado, Johnson played five seasons in the NFL after being drafted by the Steelers in the 1994 NFL. After a stint in Pittsburgh, Johnson played for the Eagles from 1998 to 2000 before joining the Patriots and winning the Super Bowl in the 2001 season.
His last NFL stop was with the Bills in 2002 before retiring. At the time of his death, he was an assistant athletic director at Heritage High School in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
