Brazilian footballer Dani Alves was arrested Friday in Spain on charges of sexually assaulting a woman.
The alleged conduct took place at a nightclub in Barcelona on Dec. 31, police told The Associated Press.
Alves was taken into custody after responding to police calls. He appears before a judge who decides on the charges. State prosecutors are seeking him to be jailed without bail, the prosecutor’s office said.

The player denied the allegations in a video he sent to Spanish TV station Antenna 3 last week. Although he admitted to being at the club, he said he didn’t know the woman and that she “never invaded anyone’s personal space.”
Alves, 39, is one of the most successful players in football, having won major titles with several elite clubs such as Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain during his long career. He currently plays for Mexican club Pumas.
The defender was a key part of Barcelona’s golden age, playing on the team’s right flank behind Lionel Messi from 2008 to 2016. He made a brief comeback last season with the Catalan club, where he won the Champions League three times.
