Alexandria – In front of friends, family and coaches, Alexandria Senior Jack Carlson announced his college destination.

On Tuesday, January 9, 2023, Carlson signed to play college football at St. John’s University in Collegeville.

“It’s been a dream school for me after all these years of playing,” Carlson said. “So it’s really nice to be able to do what I’ve always wanted to do.”

Led by head coach John Hawes, the St. John’s (NCAA DII) went 8-7-3 to reach the Minnesota Inter-College Athletic Conference semifinals last season before losing to Gustav Adolphus (1-0).

Carlson said his recruitment to the school really picked up late last summer, before the football season started.

“John was in our preseason camp,” Carlson said. “And he pulled me aside and basically said, I need to go down and visit. And that’s where things started.”

Carlson said he made an official visit to the school in early August when the season began.

“I really fell in love with the campus when I first visited. I fell in love with the way everything was visible and the activities offered almost free,” Carlson said. “I’ve been on campus a few times and have gotten used to it somewhat. Coach John Hawes really built the bridge when it came to football. The culture he put together is really something special and I really want to be part of it.”

Carlson loved soccer from an early age and dreamed of becoming a college athlete.

“It’s been a dream since I started training alone,” he said. “It was one of the first things that popped up on that list since I started sorting out my goals. I started playing football when I was three or four. , the dream of playing at college ball started. It all went up from there.I fell in love with the game and the process of getting better. And taking the next step was really special to me. That’s it.”

Carlson has been a big part of the Alexandria Boys’ football team over the last few years, helping the team achieve a record of 9-6-3 this season.

Carlson was named Alexandria’s Midfielder of the Year for the 2022 season at the team’s end-of-season awards ceremony and was named to the Minnesota State High School Soccer Coaches Association’s Class AA All-State Team. Carlsson scored his team-high eight goals and had three assists this season.

“It was incredible,” says Carlson of the support from those close to him. “If it hadn’t been for Brandon Johnson[head coach of Alexandria Boys Soccer]. I wouldn’t have been an all-state player this year. It was so wonderful.”
