Five dead in 24-hour terror on streets: Boxing Day crash claims another life

An accident near Edendale on Boxing Day left one person dead in hospital and increased holiday tolls to nine.

The latest casualties occurred around 7:20 pm on Monday after police were called into the crash on State Route 1 in Southland.

Police today said the driver died of his injuries on Wednesday.

Police said an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.

The Christmas holiday road toll is currently at 9 people and there are 5 days left in the official period.

This follows last night’s two deadly clashes that claimed the lives of four people.

Two people were killed when two cars collided in Marlborough’s Wairau Valley.

Shortly after 6pm, the police were called on SH63.

A third was taken to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency services also responded to a serious one-vehicle crash on Evans Street in Timaru.

A police spokesperson confirmed they were called to the scene around 7:45 p.m.

At 11pm, police confirmed that two people had died in the accident.

The first fatal accident during the holiday period was a car accident in Manawatu on December 23rd.

Police said a one-vehicle crash on Rongotea Rd was reported at 12:20 a.m. Rongotea.

The driver, the only person in the car, was found dead at the scene.

Two people died in another crash in the Northland area during this period.

Jacinda “Cinda” Sione-Lauaki died on Christmas Eve when her passenger car rolled over at Kotata Rise in Whangarei.

An 18-year-old girl was enjoying a night out with friends, but at about 10pm, the car she and four others were in couldn’t make a right turn at a sharp turn, swerved off the road to the left, crossed the pavement, and drove off. Crashed. Bank.

Senior Constable Warren Bunn of the Crash Unit said Sione Rauaki was thrown out of the car and found dead under the car about 60 meters off the road.

He could not say whether others were forced out of the vehicle.

A second person died on a Northland road after a car overturned in Whangarei on December 27.

Police were called to Puna Lele Drive at approximately 8:50 pm. Three people were involved, one with minor injuries and one with no injuries.

Puna Lele Drive was closed for several hours, detours were put in place at Te Hononga Street and Denbigh Cress, and the Police Serious Crash Unit conducted an investigation.

A 19-year-old woman was also killed in a one-car crash at the SH20 in Auckland earlier on Boxing Day.

A police spokesperson said they were informed of the car crash and found a dead woman at the scene. An earlier press release described it as a “serious incident” and said one person had been arrested.

The next day, a 20-year-old boy appeared in court charged with kidnapping, driving in a prohibited state, and refusing a police officer’s blood donation request. Police indicated at the time that other charges could follow.

Last year, 17 people were killed on roads across the country during the official Christmas and New Year holidays.
