Nielsen will replace Dean Pease, who retired at the end of the 2022 season at the age of 73.
As remarkable as Atlanta hired Nielsen was the way the club’s social team announced the transfer.

“Nielsen ratings have gone up,” the team wrote.

Nielsen, 43, has spent the past six seasons with the Saints and has been the team’s defensive line coach for the full six years. He added the title of assistant head coach in 2021 and the role of co-defensive coordinator last season.
Since Nielsen first joined the Saints in 2017, New Orleans has amassed 281 sacks. The Saints’ defense is also particularly strong against the run, ranking among the top four teams in the league in run defense in four of the last five seasons.
In response to Nielsen’s hiring, the Falcons also let go of three defensive coaches: defensive coach Gary Emmanuel, outside linebacker coach Ted Monacchino, and secondary coach John Hawke.
