The United States Soccer Federation announced Thursday that soccer sporting director Ernie Stewart is leaving his job to join Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

US Soccer said in a news release that Stewart will be stepping down on February 15. US Soccer hired Stewart as the USMNT’s first-ever GM in 2018. Stewart spearheaded the relatively opaque search for coaching, essentially handpicking Greg Berhalter to lead the program.
Stewart was later promoted to sporting director and began searching for a new USMNT GM under him. He hired Brian McBride for the role.
Stewart’s original contract ran until 2022, but this summer, just months before the 2022 World Cup, he signed an extension to 2026. US Soccer presented Stewart as the person leading an extensive review of his USMNT program.
That review is now heading in an uncertain direction.
