To Dan Ambrose: Former two-division world champion Emmanuel Navarrete (36-1, 30 KOs) will move up to 130 on Friday, February 3 for the vacant WBO super featherweight title on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+. 3 Fight Liam Wilson. Desert his Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The event begins at 9:00 PM ET.
The 28-year-old Navarrete is looking to become a three-division world champion against lesser-known Australia’s Wilson (11-1, 7 KOs) in the main event. Oscar Valdez has expressed interest in a match with Navarrete and it will be much more interesting than this Friday’s match.
Despite winning world titles in two weight classes, Navarret only has Isaac Doggboe on his résumé.
Full undercard:
- Jose Pedraza vs. Arnold Barbosa Jr.
- Andres Cortez vs. Luis Melendez
- Nico Ali Walsh vs. Eduardo Ayala
- Lindolfo Delgado vs. Clarence Booth
- Xavier Martinez vs. Johan Vazquez
- Richard Torres Jr. vs. James Bryant
- Emiliano Vargas vs. Francisco Duque
- Yves Ulysse Jr. vs. Javier Molina
Besides him, Navarrete’s 11-year résumé includes fighters such as Rubén Villa, Christopher Diaz and Joto Gonzalez. That’s basically it. With only four names, none of them are super talents.
Many boxing fans believe Valdes will do a lot for Navarrete. They caused all sorts of trouble for Navarrete.
If Shakur Stevenson still held the WBO super featherweight title, Navarrete wouldn’t have lifted the weight to try and win the belt.Shakur would be on another level with Navarrete and would dominate him .
It is unclear why the World Boxing Organization gave Wilson third place in its 130th ranking. Wilson lost to Joe Noinei in 2021 by fifth-round knockout.
Wilson avenged his loss by second-round TKO last April, but it’s disappointing to be stopped by an opponent of this level.
In Wilson’s last fight, he defeated Matthias Carlos Adrian Rueda in a 10-round unanimous decision last June.
Boxing fans may remember Rueda from his fight with Oscar Valdez in 2016. Valdes easily knocked out Rueda in the second round. The fact that Wilson barely beat Rueda last year says a lot about his level of talent, or lack thereof.
The undercard is stacked, has excellent fights, and has an undefeated light welterweight contender Arnold Barbosa Jr. Challenge former two-division world champions Jose ‘Sniper’ Pedraza In the chief support battle.
