If Efe Ajagba dreamed of a last-minute opponent switch, it probably wasn’t the dangerous Stephan Shaw.

A wave of cards came when Oscar Rivas withdrew with an eye injury. Guido Vianello, who was supposed to fight Shaw on the same card, would instead fight Jonathan Rice.

Shaw is a serious threat, and many would like to keep him away. Fighting from St. Louis, the aptly named “Big Shot” has all the hallmarks of a classic American fighter. But whether he can confuse heavyweight competitor Ajagba comes down to two things.

The first is stamina. Rarely has he done 10 rounds in the last few years. The second is homework. If the show had been watching him closely, they would have seen Frank Sanchez put Ajagba back together a little over a year ago. His Ajagba, who starred in his 2014 Commonwealth Games, is more than just a puncher. At the same time, he is limited and reliant on his chin.

Leaving himself exposed against Sanchez gets him knocked down with a brutal right hand, and on that basis, he mostly aims to impose his size against the show. In fact, the Sanchez fight showed that perhaps his moment had passed if he was serious about winning the world title.

Having said that, Ajagba has appeared since then. Unfortunately, injuries have hampered that progress. He moved from fighting on the Fury-Wilder card to a barren period, but Shaw was active. His last fight was against Rydell Booker, but it was his one of three wins in a row that lifted his record to 18-0.

He entered the fight with just two weeks’ notice, but it’s definitely the show that makes this match so interesting. He moves Ajagba around the ring to keep this from becoming a slog in the middle. Shaw has a relentless jab and decent power as well.

This is arguably the biggest moment in the show’s career, and if he has the resilience to go the distance, he certainly has the ability to surpass it.
