Update on Dummer Hamlin’s Recovery
Hamlin recovered quickly thanks to the initial actions taken by the Bills medical staff on the night he collapsed.
According to the doctors who treated him at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, quick and decisive action on the field not only saved Hamlin’s life, but also helped keep his neurological function intact.
Hamlin was well enough to be transferred to a hospital in Buffalo just a week after collapsing, and was discharged from the facility two days later.
Hamlin’s progress has been impressive, but there are still hurdles to overcome. His family friend Jordon Rooney told ESPN on Thursday that Hamlin “still needs oxygen and has his heart monitored regularly,” adding that he “gets tired very easily.”

After the Bills defeated the Dolphins in the wild card round to advance to this weekend’s matchup against the Bengals, more positive news followed. Bills coach Sean McDermott said Hamlin was at the team’s facility “almost every day” over the past week.

McDermott said while Hamlin was out of team meetings, for safety’s sake, “he’s back on his toes here and on his way back to himself.”

Hamlin’s first return to the Bills facility was the day before the team’s game against the Dolphins, just 12 days after the life-threatening emergency in Cincinnati.

The road to recovery will be long for Hamlin, but he was up, walking around, eating normally and posting on social media within days of falling, so the prognosis remains good.
