Detroit — The USFL is back in Detroit.

The league announced Thursday that Detroit will be the host city for two of its franchises, the Michigan Panthers and the Philadelphia Stars. The game will take place at Ford Field, home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions.

The announcement comes nearly 40 years after Michigan won the 1983 USFL Championship, coincidentally defeating Philadelphia in the title game.

“We’re back!” said Darryl Johnston, USFL Vice President of Football Operations. “With the help of some great partners, the USFL is making history by announcing the return of the Michigan Panthers to play at Ford Field in 2023. We are proud to be a part of it and we are thrilled to bring Motown music to life and energize Michigan’s Spring Professional Soccer fanbase.”

The Panthers and Stars will arrive in the Detroit metro area in mid-March for the start of training camp. With the 10-week USFL regular season beginning his April 15th, both teams will have several weekends of professional football games in downtown Detroit before arriving at Ford Field on April 30th. Departs first weekend.

Fans can pre-register USFL tickets in Detroit via Ticketmaster, make a $25 deposit to lock in priority access, or visit USFL.com for more information.

Last season, all eight USFL teams played their regular season games in Birmingham, Alabama. However, during the playoffs in Canton, Ohio last June, the USFL announced it would be expanding to more cities for his 2023 season. This is because the league will gradually move teams to their respective name markets, with all teams playing in front of local fans.

As part of that process, there will be four host cities for the 2023 season. they are:

  • Detroit, home of the Panthers and Stars
  • Birmingham, home of the Birmingham Stallions and the New Orleans Breakers
  • Memphis, home of the Memphis Showboat and Houston Gamblers
  • Canton, Ohio, home of the Pittsburgh Maurers and New Jersey Generals

The USFL is the first major spring professional football league to return for season two after a successful first season in nearly 40 years.

“We are excited to bring high-quality, competitive professional spring football to fans across the country who crave more football,” said Johnston. It has proven to be a stable league run by seasoned football leaders who promote and at the same time deliver a fan-friendly, fun and affordable stadium experience.”
