Dayton school tightens security rules for basketball games after incident

Jan. 7 — Following multiple fights and disruptions at basketball games earlier this season, Dayton Public Schools announced several new policies for DPS-sponsored athletic events on Friday.

District officials said the new procedures were “enacted with the safety of students, staff and spectators in mind.”

Here are the new policies:

— Student ticket sales close at the start of halftime for all national team games. After that time, the student will not be allowed to participate in the game unless accompanied by a parent or guardian participating in the game.

— All students must present ID to gain admission to the game. Dayton Public Schools students must provide their DPS Student ID. All other guests under the age of 21 must present photo state ID or driver’s license. All IDs are scanned at the door. (DPS leadership confirmed Saturday that non-DPS visiting school students who do not have a driver’s license will be admitted by presenting their school’s student ID).

— Students in high school and younger must be accompanied by a guardian. All adult ticket sales will end after Q3. To make sure ticket sales are still going on, watch the live stream on the Dayton Public Schools Athletics YouTube channel to see how the game is going.

The school district also reminded fans that the door to additional spectators will be closed if capacity is reached for any game.

On December 9, a brawl broke out after the Ponnits at Meadowdale Boys basketball game and there was a shooting. Then, at Dunbar’s Meadowdale match on 13 December, eight of her teenage girls were arrested in a post-match brawl. It was also reported that a group of people broke into the building early in that game.

A Dayton Public Schools official said Friday that police will continue to monitor the game’s parking lot for as long as staffing permits. District Security Resource Officers remain on-site for all events.
