Jerry Jones has called on Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy to coach as long as Tom Landry, the longest-serving coach in franchise history.
This is old hat now, a tough call to create a second Legacy after Landry.
Upon arriving in Dallas in 1989, Jones fired Landry and hired eight head coaches. 4 of them he has been with for over 4 years. Jason Garrett, who many thought would play Landry’s role, lived nine years without barely skimming the depths of Landry’s 29 years.
At a press conference Thursday, McCarthy, 59, said Jones wants him to match Landry’s tenure.
“We’re in a great position, in his words, when it comes to our relationship with Jerry. He’s thrilled about our partnership,” McCarthy said. “He’s told me many times this week that he wants me to coach him here as long as the laundry coaches do. And I said, ‘OK, that’s a long time.’ I think our relationship is really good. I think the ability to argue and disagree is what we do well and I think that’s important. ”
Prior to coming to Dallas, McCarthy led the Green Bay Packers to a 125-77 overall record and a Super Bowl ring in 2010. 1-2 in the playoffs.
The 49ers suffered two postseason eliminations in 2021 and last week’s divisional rounds, but Jones didn’t think twice about the state of McCarthy’s position.
“No. No, no, not at all,” he said after losing 19-12.
This reassurance and increased confidence brought attention to other Cowboys staffers, particularly offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator.
Quinn, who has surfaced as a head coaching candidate, has told three potential head coaching jobs in Arizona, Indianapolis and Denver that he will remain in Dallas, according to multiple reports. expressed a commitment and wanted him to stay unless he was tempted elsewhere.
