On the night of Tuesday 3 January 2023, the CHS Islanders football team took to the field hoping to add another win to their undefeated season (6,0) and win their first game of the new year. Unfortunately, Coronado lost his 4–2 loss, his first loss of the season against Del Norte, breaking his six-game unbeaten streak. “It was a tough match. They are the defending champions of Division 1, so we knew they were good. It served as a wake-up call for our team,” said senior Nick Law.
Del Norte proved to be a very challenging opponent for Coronado from the moment the game’s first whistle was blown. Coronado scored three goals in the first half, with Coronado only being able to score one goal by senior Dylan Grenefeld.
After a pep talk with the head coach and refueling at halftime, “our coach told us positive encouragement was the key to getting back into the game. We scored two goals and almost made a comeback.” ,” said Lorr.
Coronado entered the second half with a revamped game plan. At the 60th minute, senior Conor Little scored his second to close the gap by one goal. At that point the score was 3-2 for him.
Del Norte scored before the end of the game to extend their lead and secure their team’s win, adding their fifth win of the season.
After a tough loss to the defending Division 1 champions, Coronado decided to trust the process and eliminate unnecessary mistakes.
Recently, the team has taken their practice to a new level and developed better chemistry. Their season is getting tougher, but they are preparing hard and training hard every day in hopes of becoming champions this season.
