The Copa America, South America’s largest football championship, will open in 2024 as part of a broader cooperative agreement between football players in the Americas, including at least one new tournament and an expansion of intercontinental competitions for clubs and women’s nationals. Concacaf, which oversees North and Central America and the Caribbean, and Conmevol, which oversees South America, announced their agreement on friday.
In 2024, six teams from the Concacaf region will participate in the ten South American nations that normally compete in the 100-year-old South American championship, the Copa America.
The 2016 Copa America was held in the United States, the only time outside of South America, and the only time the 16 teams participated.
It is not uncommon for Copa America to include “guest teams” from other regions. Although Mexico reached the finals in 1993 and 2001, no guest team has won the Copa America. The United States has made four appearances in the tournament and two semi-final appearances.
The federation said the expanded Copa America would serve, in part, as a key window for top-level preparations in the Western Hemisphere for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The tournament will take place from mid-June to mid-July 2024, competing in schedule with that summer’s European Championship, a big event on the football calendar that takes place every four years, although both tournaments will be postponed until July 2024. The Paris Olympics will open in the latter half of the year.
Argentina have won their latest Copa America in 2021. This is Lionel the highlight of his Messi career and also his first major national team title. He and Argentina followed suit by winning his 2022 World Cup. In total, Argentina and Uruguay have each won the Copa America 15 times, and Brazil has won his 9th.
The federation also announced that the 2024 Women’s Concacafe Gold Cup will feature the top four South American teams and eight Concacafe teams.
A new regional men’s club competition is also planned, with two club teams from each federation participating. The federation said it hopes to start its tournament in 2024 as well. are planned, but are being held less frequently.
