Ohio State quarterback on deadline day for eligible players to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft CJ Stroud finally announces he’s going pro.
Stroud is expected to be a top 10 pick when the first round begins on April 27th. The declaration is welcome news for teams that need multiple of his QBs, including the Indianapolis Colts.
Many analysts and mock drafters put Stroud in a Colts uniform on opening day at Indianapolis. It’s easy to see why there’s so much interest, and why it’s tied to the Colts, who are in dire need of a franchise quarterback in this draft.
Through his three seasons at Ohio State, Stroud had a stellar record, passing 575-of-830 (69.3%) for 8,123 yards, 85 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions. Not to mention, he posted his blistering 71.9% completion percentage in 2021 and scored his career-high 44 touchdowns.
Two of Stroud’s shortcomings were his performance under pressure and his ability to run, which was sorely needed in Day’s offense as a Buckeye. However, Stroud silenced many critics by orchestrating a masterful pass in the college playoff semifinals against the Georgia Bulldogs (they would go on to win the national championship).
Stroud shined, passing 23-of-34 (67.6%) for 348 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also made incredibly difficult throws look easy in the big game.
Is this a good enough sample to erase the ‘suffocating under pressure’ criticism?
Stroud had a relationship with the Colts last month when they discussed future quarterbacks in the NFL. Now that he’s committed to the league, who will take him?
Now that the Colts are connected to him and others, they have free-handed options as to what their future holds. I just got it.
