Houston climbed back to the top of the rankings for the first time since Dec. 5 after the Cougars shook SMU and Cincinnati in this week’s AAC play, improving to a 16-1 record and a perfect four on the season. -0 for conference play. Houston was in second place behind Purdue in last week’s poll, but the Boilermakers have successfully caught up after suffering their first loss of the season this past week.

Houston started the season in 3rd place in the coaches polls and has not finished lower than 4th in the season as one of the most consistently dominant teams in the sport. He leads all college basketball teams in scoring margins and is one of only two teams to own both offense and defense in the top 10 on KenPom.com’s adjusted efficiency rankings.

The only other team to have both a top 10 offense and defense in KenPom-adjusted efficiency margins, UConn has been the best in coaches polls over the last few months, despite having an unranked year. Another team consistently ranked as a top 10 team. The Huskies have stumbled in the latest polls after falling to Providence last week, but are now No. 7 in Monday’s update. This was partially bolstered by a big conference win over fellow Big East mate Clayton.

Behind Houston in this week’s Coaches Poll are No. 2 Kansas, No. 3 Purdue, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Tennessee. Rounding out the top 10 are UCLA, UConn, Gonzaga, Arizona and Texas.
