Basketball is a big topic in the Chicagoland area. With star players like Kevin Garnett and Dwyane Wade hailing from the city, his season at High School gives him a chance to see his basketball future firsthand.

The city is home to a number of veteran and strong high school programs, but this year we have a new addition to our list of must-see teams: Kenwood Academy Broncos.

“This is Chicago basketball,” head coach Mike Irvin said in an interview with the Hyde Park Herald. ) will not.”

The Broncos dominated the 2022-2023 season. Earlier in the month, they won the #1 spot in AP’s Illinois High School Association (IHSA) class 4A level poll for the first time in school history.

“Being number one means you can get things done and move towards your goals…that’s winning the city and the state,” Irvin said later in the interview.

The Broncos are 15-2 overall, with many notable victories in the Red South Conference of the Chicago Public League (CPL).

Simeon’s legendary program has produced many professional players, led by Derrick Rose. Considered one of the best teams in the city, he beats Kenwood regularly, but that all changed earlier this month.

Kenwood won by 3 points with a final score of 46-43. The team’s star guard, Darin “Dai-Dai” Ames, put the Wolverines on the money.

In an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Ames said he didn’t know his school had never beaten Simeon.

“It’s a first for me,” he said.

Senior Solomon Mosley stood out in another game. The 6’8 player was integral to the team’s defensive strategy. He was a strong match against his 6’9 twins Miles and Wes Rubin of the Wolverines.

“Mosley was the key to the game,” Irvin told The Sun-Times. “He’s muscular. We can go big or small. That’s the beauty of this team. Mosley knew this was his time.”

With a historic victory, Kenwood beat another famous program, the Curie Condor. The Broncos will take on neighboring rivals Hyde Park Academy Thunderbirds on Thursday at 5 p.m. They also play a non-conference game against Camden High School (NJ) at his McGrath-Phillips arena in DePaul on Friday.
