The Bears’ coaching staff remains uneasy as Senior Bowl Week hits.
They added another last week, Zach Cable, son of former Raiders head coach and longtime NFL assistant Tom Cable. Zak Cable becomes an aggressive quality control coach. He himself announced his appointment.
Cable, who coached outside linebackers in Northern Colorado last year, spent four years as a junior assistant with the Raiders in Oakland and Las Vegas before going to Northern Colorado.
With the Raiders, he assisted position coaches on both sides of the ball in a variety of situations, including linebacker and offensive line.
The Bears have yet to announce a new defensive backs coach to replace James Lowe, though there have been mixed and conflicting reports about a potential offer for one candidate.
The latest news came when CBSHQ’s Josina Anderson reported Tuesday that former Bears safety Chris Harris has been offered the positions of defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. He was widely reported to be a candidate along with former Packers assistant Jerry Gray, who signed with the Falcons as assistant head coach. He reportedly has a job as a coach and defensive passing game coordinator.
Anderson also reported that Harris is a possible candidate for San Francisco defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes after Demeko Lyons was named head coach of the Houston Texans on Tuesday.
So it sounds like nothing has been decided about Harris anywhere at this point.
Harris coached the defensive backs in Washington and served as the Bears’ quality control coach under Mark Trestman for two years.
Just before the end of the season, Lowe decided to take a job coaching defensive backs at his alma mater in South Florida.
