On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Celtics forward Walter Lee McCarty was born in 1974 in Evansville, Indiana. McCarty was a future Celtics coach during his college days at the University of Kentucky, where he played basketball under President Rick He Pitino and was elected 19th. He was drafted by the New York Knicks in the 1996 NBA Draft.

He played 35 games there before being traded to the Celtics for draft assets for Chris Mills along with Scott Brooks, Donte Jones, and John Thomas in October 1997, before being traded to the Phoenix Suns. A second-round pick in the 2007 draft.

The Kentucky alum averaged 5.7 points and 2.8 boards per game when he played greens and whites as a player, before returning to serve as an assistant coach at Boston from 2013-2018.

It’s also the birthday of former Celtic center Andrew De Klerk, who was born in 1973 in Detroit, Michigan.

After playing college ball at the University of Florida, DeClercq was selected 34th overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 1995 NBA Draft.

The Detroit native played two seasons with the Celtic club before signing in 1997, averaging 5.4 points and 4.8 boards per game with the team in part of the two seasons.

February 1 marks the anniversary of the day former Celtics forward Fred Sanders was traded to the (then) New Orleans Jazz (now Utah) for draft assets.

After signing as a free agent in 1976, Sanders played two seasons in Boston, averaging 5.1 points and 2.8 boards per game with the club.

It was on this day that Ward B. “Hoot” Gibson Jr. died in 1958 at the young age of 36 in a tragic car accident.

Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1921, Gibson went undrafted out of Creighton to play for the NBL’s (then) Tri-Cities Blackhawks (now the Atlanta Hawks) and the Denver Nuggets (as opposed to more recent iterations). Played in the progenitor league absorbed by the NBA before joining the Celtics in 1949.

Gibson averaged 3.5 points per game in Boston — rest in peace.

Darmy O’Connell made his debut on this day in 1949 in a 76-68 loss to the Rochester Royals (now the Sacramento Kings).

The Holy Cross alum scored one point from the free throw. The same game was also Holly His Cross alumni George Kaftan’s debut.

The Celtics forward scored 10 points in his first game in Boston.

Finally, it also marks the anniversary of Celtics center Greg Kite being fired after five seasons at the club.

The 21st pick out of Boston in the 1983 NBA Draft, Kite was a deep rotation player who never made it to Boston but became a quality bench option later in his career.
