Cambodia Boxing Fed: Entering a Golden Age

The Cambodian Boxing Federation (CBF) has announced that its athletes, notably Cambodian-Uzbek heavyweight Rajapov Abdullah, will win their first Asian-level medal results ahead of the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games hosted by the Kingdom in May. I am optimistic that I can claim it.

CBF Secretary General Bai Sophoan expressed hope that the federation has sent four fighters to the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. The event, scheduled to conclude on 27 January, will be the last international experience Cambodian athletes will have before competing on home soil at the 2023 SEA Games.

“This is the last Asian Games before the Games and the federation has high expectations. I believe that the three men and one woman we sent will return home with at least one medal.” This is the first the kingdom has won at this level,” Sophoan told the Post on Jan. 18.

Last November, Rajapov fought at the 2022 ASBC Asian Elite Men’s Boxing Championships in Jordan’s capital Amman. Heavyweight Pug defeated South Korean Haneul Jeong by points in his first match before losing to another South Korean in his second match.

He is widely believed to have a better chance in under-22 competitions against inexperienced fighters.

CBF has selected 17 boxers for its SEA Games team and is confident of surpassing the targets set by the Cambodian SEA Games Organizing Committee (CAMSOC).

“We have 12 male boxers and 5 female Pugs in the field and hope to win multiple gold medals at home. In terms of silver and bronze, I am confident that we will surpass all of our previous achievements in the Games.” said Sophoan.
