California has 26 Division I men’s basketball teams from six conferences, two of which have actually had worse seasons than the Cal Golden Bears. At least according to computer ratings.
Cal lives at 288 NCAA. Latest NET Computer Rankings of the country’s 363 Division I programs. This is the lowest number of any Pac-12 team or any of his six DI teams in the Bay Area.
The Bears are 3-17 overall, with the Pac-12 bottom of the table at 2-7. They will play at Stanford on Saturday (8-12, 2-7) planning their escape from the conference basement.
But two California teams trail them in the NET rankings. Both are Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge (CSUN) at the Big West Conference.
Bakersfield are 6-13 overall, including wins against non-Division I foes La Sierra and Whittier. The Roadrunners are 2-6 in the Big West, and he’s tied for 8th in the 11-team league.
CSUN is 4-16, beating non-DI opponents San Diego Christian and La Sierra. The Matador is last in the Big West standings, 1-8.
Eight of the 26 in-state teams are ranked in the top 100 by the NET, ahead of No. 5 UCLA and No. 6 St. Mary’s. San Diego State University, ranked 28th, is the only other Golden State program. in the top 50.
Cal’s three wins this season were Texas-Arlington (297th), Colorado (64th) and Stanford (125th). The Bears have gone winless in his seven games away from home and he is 2-7 in quad 3 or quad 4 games.
This is the fifth year that the NET Ranking, an NCAA evaluation tool, has been adopted to help NCAA tournament selection committees evaluate team resumes.
NET has replaced RPI as an important evaluation tool. This includes the strength of the schedule, game locations, and net offensive and defensive efficiency. The scoring margin was originally part of the formula, but was removed when the formula was tweaked in 2020.
