With starting cornerback Damari Mathis (concussion) out of the season finale, the Denver Broncos turned to an unexpected option against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero has decided to start undrafted rookie Jaquan McMillian, who spent the first 16 games of the season with the practice team. Evero believed McMillian starting from the practice team looked good enough for him to jump into the lineup. And he was right.

McMillian played all 68 snaps on defense and was close to seven total tackles and an interception that was ruled suspiciously incomplete.

“It felt great,” McMillian said of his NFL debut. “I was on the practice team all year long. I just kept working and learning from my seniors. I paid attention in meetings. It felt great to stay on track and come here and show what I can do.”

First start, first win: 31-28.

Broncos veteran safety Kareem Jackson said it was “unbelievable” how well McMillian played in his first action as a pro. Agreed and declared a bright future for the cornerback.

“Great,” Jewel said. “He played so well today and should have had that pick – they want to review it again. Great to see. I expect the next big thing from them [season]”

Speaking of nearly intercepting, McMillian believes he secured it, and Broncos fans agree.

“I definitely had it,” said the young cornerback. “Obviously it looked like I had my hand under the ball, but the rules were different. That’s the reality. I have everything to do it next year. I think I have it for sure. I thought it was a touchdown for a second, but it was overturned. That’s the reality.”

Although the interception did not count, McMillian’s fans and teammates were impressed with the cornerback’s performance. He now has momentum heading into his second season, the 2023 campaign.

“It means everything,” McMillian said of ending the year on such a positive note. I try to keep learning from my seniors and coaches.

Denver may have found another gem in their secondary.
