When the San Francisco 49ers picked Brock Purdy as one of the final picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, the petite quarterback from Iowa unwittingly joined the posh club and became the latest man known as “Mr. Irrelevant.” became.

Origin of Mr. Unrelated
Forty years after the NFL hosted its first draft, former NFL wide receiver Paul Salata coined the moniker Mr. Irrelevant.
After a middling career in the NFL for three years from 1949 to 1951, Salata starred in movies and worked on construction sites. He made his debut in 1976 at “Irrelevant Week,” inviting the final pick of that year’s draft to a ceremony in California to award him with the player’s fumbling trophy, one of college football’s finest. The Heisman Award, which is awarded to athletes, was playfully called Rouseman His Trophy.
Despite the whimsical nature of the idea, Sarata told The New York Times in a 2017 interview that his intentions behind Mr. Irelevant were sincere.

Who was the first Mr. Inrelevant?
His name is Kelvin Kirk. A wide receiver from Dayton, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 17th round of the 1976 NFL Draft, placing him 487th overall.
As the story goes, Kirk actually missed his flight to California for an unrelated week. According to his 2002 article in The Bradenton Herald, Salata asked his 40-year-old butcher, who looks like Kirk, to represent him, but no one noticed.
“How irrelevant is that?” Kirk told the newspaper. “It is too irrelevant that the first irrelevant person missed the flight.”
Kirk, who died in 2003, was cut off during training camp but played 78 games in the Canadian Football League.
In more recent history…
Kirk’s career was relatively typical for Mr. Irrelevant. Of the 47 players, about half (24) had never played in one of his NFL regular season games.
However, all three recent Mr. Irrelevant have had some success. In addition to Purdy’s rise with the 49ers, last pick for 2021, Grant Steward, is still in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts. 2020 winner Tae Crowder has started 31 games over three seasons with the New York Giants. After that, he signed with the Steelers.
Other recent Mr. Irrelevants such as Trey Quinn (now USFL) and Chad Kelly (now CFL) have played elsewhere. Some don’t play soccer.
How is Purdy’s relevance ranked?
It depends in large part on what you consider a successful career.
No one has made it to the Pro Bowl since the last pick. In terms of longevity, the clear leader is his Succop, and his 14 seasons in the league (and counting) top his Mr. Irrelevants. Only three others have lasted more than four years in the NFL.
But Purdy may get there eventually. And in terms of notoriety, he’s probably already earned the crown.
Purdy is not only the second Mr. Irrelevant quarterback to appear in an NFL game after Kelly, but the first to have consistent runs of any kind, not to mention success. The 49ers had won every Purdy start, and he looked more like an established veteran than a final pick rookie. In total, Purdy completed 1,920 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and, perhaps most importantly, just four interceptions.
“He’s incredible,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters. Being able to handle the ball like that is definitely what impressed me the most.”
One asterisk in the debate is quarterback Bill Kenny, who started 77 games over nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and was nominated for the Pro Bowl in 1983. In the 1978 NFL Draft, Lee Washburn, who was selected after him, was unable to attend training camp due to an injury.
