Brewers agree free-agent corner infielder/outfielder Brian AndersonKen Rosenthal of The Athletic reports (twitter link). The deal is pending physical.
Anderson spent his entire career as a member of the Marlins. Selected in the third round of the 2014 draft, the University of Arkansas product reached the majors just over three years later. He made his debut at the end of his 2017 season and established himself as Miami’s daily third baseman the following season.
It was the first in four straight years that Miami drafted Anderson in a hot corner in the season opener. In his first three his seasons, the right-handed hitter was a somewhat quietly productive player on both sides of the ball. He hit at an above-average level every year between his 2018 and his 2020, showing quality hard his contact his number solid plate his discipline and his skills in contact. Miami’s cavernous ballpark hasn’t had much of an advantage in terms of home runs, but he topped 30 doubles in both 2018-19.
Overall, Anderson hit .266/.350/.436 in his first three full seasons. He combined that quality offense with a slightly above average mark in hot corners from the general defensive metrics. While he wasn’t a star, Anderson looked like some of the solid regulars that could at least be included in Miami’s lineup throughout his Arbitration season.
However, the last two years have been disappointing, mainly due to injuries. Anderson has missed the extended 2021 season due to a subluxation of his left shoulder. In 67 games when he was healthy enough to play, he could only manage .249/.337/.378 lines. He had his two IL stints last season. First he was due to a cramp in his hip in June, then another left shoulder problem at the end of the summer that kept him out for six weeks. Anderson appeared in his 98 games, but recorded a career-worst .222/.311/.346 his line in 383 plate appearances.
