Brayden Shen scored again on a power play and shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.
Shen put away the winner in a tiebreaker after Robert Thomas and Pavel Buknevic scored through Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov.
Brandon Third scored two goals, including one shorthanded, to help the understaffed St. Louis reach 18-17-3. Jordan Cairo and Josh Reybo also scored, and Jordan Binnington made 20 saves.
St. Louis placed star forward Vladimir Tarasenko (hand) and captain Ryan O’Reilly (broken leg) on injured reserve Monday.
Michael Bunting scored two goals for Toronto, including a power play. Pierre Engvall, William Nylander and Auston Matthews added goals as the Maple Leafs fell to 23-8-7 and Samsonov stopped 27 shots. Matthews also assisted Nylander’s goal and finished the game with 501 career points for him.
A wild second period saw the team score six goals, three of them in a span of 1:17.
Kyrou gave St. Louis a 3-1 lead and advanced to second with 3:09. Nylander scored for Toronto as Kyrou’s goal was still being announced over the public address system.
Leivo picked up a rebound from Samsonov’s pad at 9:32 to give the Blues a 4-2 lead. Bunting responded 17 seconds later, heading to Toronto to rebound Binnington.
Matthews quickly cut into the Blues lead to make it 5-4. Bunting tied the game at 5 with him on a power play at 7:55 in the third period.
